Core of Life, Central Coast (COL CC) has had a fantastic boost of funds for 2016/2017. Recent submissions from YFER to local Council and the Australian Government were successful and are enabling COL education to reach more young people in our local area than ever before! Past funding from local councils and Primary Health Network to current funding has allowed the program to flow seamlessly from one year to the next with schools like Brisbane Water Secondary College going into the 4th year of having the program. Benefits of COL program provision over consecutive years being delivered to the same community, far outweigh a one off exposure to the program. Evaluations show that key health messages are being understood and information shared between peer groups.
2016 will end with youth sessions to year 9 at Brisbane Water Secondary College, Wadalba Community School, Gorokan High School, Henry Kendall College and Wyong High School. 2017 will begin with COL sessions at Berkeley Vale College.
Facilitators from a variety of community services, teachers/education staff and midwives continue to collaborate and work together to deliver the program. It is always so valuable to have a range of people who work with youth co-facilitating and familiarizing the students with the services in their local area. School principal’s have been very supportive of program implementation by releasing their teachers to train and assist with co-presenting the education sessions within their high schools across the entire year levels.
The positive feedback we receive from those who participate in the program inspires us to move forward for COL CC. Evaluations conducted at youth sessions always produce lovely comments and positive outcomes. Here are some examples:
From the students…..
“I liked it all it gave an amazing insight”
“It was a safe, fun environment and was easy to share”“
I liked…“Learning about how I was born”
….students want more…..they want to know about…
“How to prevent it”
“We need more information on the before pregnancy stage”
“More on babies health”
“More about caring for a baby”
“More about each topic (post natal depression, violence etc)
“More on teenage births”
“About new mums”
“Thanks to you and the presenters for such a wonderful presentation. The kids loved it and so did the supervising staff. I think you do an amazing job providing such a great service”.
“We have been most impressed with this course and the acceptance and response of both boys and girls. The level of teenage pregnancy certainly while still at school has seemed to be reduced………… The presentation of the Core of Life program is professionally executed and of greatest relevance and significance to students of this age”.
“I believe it to be an invaluable opportunity and experience for the students to be able to engage in an interactive, engaging and truly effective way to educate the, about the true realities of pregnancy, child birth and parent hood”.
YFER is very grateful to the organisation’s funding COL on the Central Coast. A big thank-you to those who enthusiastically participate, facilitate and believe in the importance of this education.
