COL Community

COL actively engages community partnerships for program delivery. Education sessions are co-facilitated by representatives of many sectors within any given community.

Health – e.g. midwives, nurses, indigenous health workers, maternal child health nurses.

Education – e.g. teachers, school nurses, student teachers, assistant teachers, school chaplains, school counsellors, school liaison officers.

Youth – e.g. youth workers, drug and alcohol workers, sexual health teams, sport and recreational officers.

Community – e.g. non-government organisations, childbirth educators, family planning, community leaders, peer educators.

Community partners are engaged to break down barriers to accessing support services, it also allows the program to be tailored to ‘fit’ each community. These trained facilitators provide locally driven, accurate and appropriate information and an opportunity for quality role modelling. This practice encourages community participation and ownership and assists to break down existing silos to offer a coordinated, cohesive approach to supporting youth and families in their region.

COL Embracing Diversity

YFER/COL is not morally, politically or religiously aligned with any other body.

COL continues to strive in meeting the needs of a diverse range of youth families and communities nationally and in the near future, globally.

Each program, training and resource is critically evaluated to determine its appropriateness for each anticipated group or audience. Extensive consultation is allowed for in any further development and feedback is encouraged from all concerned.

Integral to the COL program is the need for accommodating different learning styles and concerns for literacy and language difficulties.

The didactic style of presentation including visual, auditory and kinesthetic, permits each member within a group to understand the information being delivered. The prolific use of props, storytelling, roleplay and slide images accentuates the impact of the program delivery  to reinforce key messages embedded within.

Examples of groups accessing COL education training and resources are:

  • Indigenous organisations urban and rural/remote
  • Alternative learning settings
  • Disengaged youth groups
  • New immigrant programming
  • Juvenile Justice.
